On the Utility of a Junk Drawer
A short defense of the one drawer that makes no sense.
Every organized kitchen has one drawer that refuses to be organized. This is an argument that it is doing important work.
The junk drawer is the one part of an otherwise organized home that resists every system imposed on it, and I have come to think this resistance is not a failure but a function.
Holding On
It holds the things that do not yet know what they are for - a spare key to a lock no one remembers, a rubber band that might be load-bearing someday, a single screw that matches nothing currently in the house.
Creatures of Habit
A house with no junk drawer, I suspect, is a house that has decided every object must justify itself immediately. I am not sure that is a virtue.
